So. Amboy man channels 'hopes and dreams' through poetry

Self-publishing his fourth book, Charles Lobaito focuses

on the human experience.

By day, resident Charles Lobaito is an assistant manager for a local health store. But in his off hours, Lobaito is tapping into his creative side, and writing poetry.

Lobaito recently self-published a book of poery called "The Distance Between Hopes and Dreams" This is his fourth book of poetry. "Perception of the Navigator" (2009), "The Horizon" (2002) and "E=Eternity" (2001) all precede it.

He said much of the inspiration for his poetry comes from current events, such as politics, global warming and war. He aims to give [the audience] a modern spin for this generation.

He also looks at universal experiences, such as love. "I'd like them to maybe learn something about the human experience," he said of his readers. Lobaito said he has also gotten some inspiration from the town he has called home for the past four years. "It has a good feeling," he said of South Amboy, "It has a small hometown feeling. Once you live here for a while, it's your home."

Lobaito lives near the train station, which he finds to be a great place to discover insights. He also finds the waterfront a powerful muse. "I walk down to the waterfront with my notepad," he said. Charles worked on "The Distance Between Hopes and Dreams" for about two to three years, but it features work from the last 10. He said he sees writers like T.S. Eliot, Billy Collins, and Alan Ginsberg as literary role models.

Charles previously used his poetry skills to write songs for a hard rock band he use to belong to. In terms of songwriting, he said he is influenced by bands like Stone Temple Pilts, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. "The way they wrote their songs is very poetic," he said. He has received a lot of great feedback about his work.

"A lot of people are supporting me," Lobaito said. "I would like to thank my friends, family, and people at my job, who believe in me."
